On Tuesday, Apple announced that it would be making its latest OS X Mavericks upgrade free of charge. This means that if you have a Mac that will support it and you can access the Mac App Store, you can update to the latest version without spending a penny!

Apple has slowly been making its software updates cheaper. The latest upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion cost around £39 and the previous Snow Leopard install disc cost £26.
This time it seems Apple wanted to make it even cheaper though – which will no doubt be uncomfortable news for rivals such as Microsoft, who make serious profits from Windows sales.
Here’s a list of Mac models which are compatible with OS X Mavericks:
• iMac
• MacBook
• MacBook Pro
• MacBook Air
• Mac mini
• Mac Pro .

If you’ve got access to the Mac App Store, you’re probably running Snow Leopard , Lion or Mountain Lion . If you have any of these, you’ll now be able to download OS X Mavericks for free.
If you have an older version of OS X you’ll need to purchase Snow Leopard , which will give you the Mac App Store.
Taking things that little bit further, Apple have even said if you don’t have broadband access, you can pop into an Apple Retail Store and use theirs! They really want everyone to be running their latest software and I think that anyone who can really should, to help them get the most out of their Mac.
