Unboxing and assembling your Microsoft Lumia 650
Inside the box* you should find:
- 1 x Microsoft Lumia 650
- 1 x Battery
- 1 x Mains charger
*some box contents may vary
You will also need a nano-SIM, either from your old phone or one given to you at point-of-sale. If you wish to install a microSD (memory) card, you'll need that to hand also.
Assembly
The first thing you will have to do in order to insert the nano-SIM and microSD cards is to remove the Lumia 650's back cover. Holding the phone upright and with the screen facing away from you, use the small thumbnail hole where the charging port is to begin to pull the back cover away. Once that bottom part starts to come away you can then pull the rest of the cover away too. The cover is quite flexible so don't worry too much if it bends a little. If the battery has already been inserted, remove this first to reveal the slots for the cards to go in.
The nano-SIM and microSD cards slide into slots in the left edge of the battery slot. There are indicators on the information strip to show which cards go where, and which way round. The microSD goes in the slot nearest the camera lens, with the thin end going in first and the gold-coloured contacts facing down. The nano-SIM card goes in the slot furthest away from the camera lens, again with the gold-coloured contacts facing down, and with the cut-off corner end inserted first.

With the cards installed, replace the battery (making sure that the contacts are lined up with the body of the phone) and then carefully replace the back cover. You can use the camera hole as a guide to place it, and then press firmly around all the edges until the whole cover is clicked back in to place.
Charging the Microsoft Lumia 650
The next thing to do is make sure the phone has enough power. Plug the mains adapter into a power socket and the smaller end into the micro-USB socket on the bottom edge of the Microsoft Lumia to start charging the phone. There should be some charge already in the battery but it may not be enough to complete the set up, so be prepared to connect the charger if necessary as you work through this guide.

Set up your phone for the first time
- Scroll through to choose the language you want to use on your Lumia (English is the default) and tap next.
- Select your country or region by tapping the box and choosing from the drop-down menu. If you're in the UK, then that's already selected so just tap Next.
- Tap Accept to agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Statement, which you can inspect by tapping the links on screen.
- Check that the time zone, date and time are correct. If any are not, then tap the box and adjust using the sliders onscreen. When you've got the correct time and date showing, tap Next.

- You will be asked to connect to Wi-Fi. Find your Wi-Fi network name in the list and tap on it to start the connection process. You can also Skip this step if you wish, but we would always recommend using Wi-Fi when possible, as the connection is usually faster and more stable, and it doesn't affect your data allowance!
- Enter the wireless password when prompted. This may also be referenced on your router as the WEP key, WPA key, wireless key or passphrase. This will be case sensitive so make sure you enter it correctly, checking it by tapping in the Show password box, and tap Done when you are ready to proceed.
- If it was successful the handset will show the network you are connected to, and a Wi-Fi symbol will appear in the top left corner of the screen, next to the signal bars. Tap Next to proceed.
- Tap Express to initialise the listed settings for error reporting, Find my phone, search personalisation, etc, as listed. If you wish to customise these settings, tap Customise and change any settings you wish to.

- The next screen tells you about keeping your life in sync with a Microsoft account, and this is the most important account you can add to a Windows Phone. Your Lumia 650 needs one in order to operate correctly, back up your data, and to allow you to download apps from the Windows Store. If you have an email address with ending in hotmail.com, live.com or outlook.com, or their .co.uk counterparts, then you already have a Microsoft account, and you should tap sign in. If not, tap create one to make a free Microsoft account by completing the on screen form.
- If you're signing in, enter your Microsoft account email address and password in the boxes provided, and tap Next. If you're signing up for a new account, complete the onscreen form.
- If you have used the same Microsoft on a previous Windows Phone, you will be invited to restore it from a backup. If so, either tap the phone name you wish to restore from, or tap Don't restore, and then tap Next.

- You will be asked about uploading your photos and videos to One Drive, which is free online storage from Microsoft. This is always a good idea as most digital images are irreplaceable. Tap Next to set this up, or Notnow to skip this.
- Cortana is your own personal digital assistant, and can help you control your phone, send emails and messages, and much more all using the power of your voice. You can choose not to set this up by tapping Not now, but if you wish to use it, or at least try it out, tap Use Cortana.
- Your Lumia will send a few minutes configuring some pre-installed apps, and when it has completed this tap Next.
- That's it, you're ready to go! Tap Done to close the wizard.

At this point you have finished with the initial set up and you will be on the Lock Screen. Swipe up on the screen to unlock it, and you will see the home screen. At the bottom there are three icons on a menu bar; The Windows icon in the middle will always bring you back to this home screen, the back arrow on the left will take you back to the previous screen, wherever you are, and the magnifying glass is there to open the search tool, to help you search your phone or the internet.

Connecting to Wi-Fi and mobile networks
Your new Lumia 650 has two ways to connect to the internet, either using mobile internet through your phone's SIM card or via a wireless network. Here's how to connect your new handset to both of these services.
Connecting to a Wi-Fi network
The Wi-Fi setup on the Lumia couldn't be easier. You will need to know the password (if required) for the network before you begin. Once you have that, then follow these few simple steps to connect to your chosen wireless network:
- From the home screen, swipe right-to-left to open up your apps.
- Scroll down and tap on Settings.
- In sthe settings menu, tap Network & wireless.
- Tap on WiFi.

- Make sure the switch is set to On. Find your chosen network in the list shown on screen, and tap on it to continue.
- Enter the password, bearing in mind it will be case-sensitive. Depending on your router, it may also be called the wireless passkey or passphrase, WEP key, or WPA key. There is a tickbox to display the password you have entered, in order to check it's spelt correctly before attempting to connect. Tap Done to connect and move on.
- If all goes well you should see the words Connected to followed by your network name, and also a wi-fi symbol appearing on the top line of the display, next to the signal bars. If it isn't fully solid, that just means the signal isn't full strength, but should still work fine.
Connecting to mobile internet
When you insert your micro-SIM and turn your Lumia 650 on for the first time it will attempt to set up your mobile data connection automatically. The indicator for mobile data is a letter (G, E, H, 3Gor 4G) alongside the signal bars at the top-left corner of the display, as shown left. When Wi-Fi is connected, these are replaced by the Wi-Fi symbol, so you may need to turn off Wi-Fi in order to check your mobile internet connection.
If you can get on to the internet without Wi-Fi then your handset is up and running and you won't need to do anything in this section. If not, then these steps should help to get your handset configured, just remember to keep checking for the data indicator letter next to the signal bars after each change!
- Open the Network & wireless settings by swiping across to access your Apps, scrolling down and taping on Settings then tapping Wireless & networks.
- Tap WiFi and turn it off using the switch, then go back and tap on Mobile+SIM.
- Make sure the Data connection switch is On. If not, tap on it to change this to on. Often this 'll need to do.is all you'
- You may also need to check the settings in the Lumia. Scroll down and tap on SIM settings.

- The Network selection should be set to automatic. If this does not bring the correct settings to your 650, tap Search for networks and choose the correct settings from the list of SIM card profiles.
- If your network is not listed, you will need to contact your mobile network to have the settings sent to your phone, or you can add them manually. This can be done by tapping Add an Internet APN or Add an MMS APN and completing the form, entering the correct settings. Don't be put off by the number of fields of data required, we have written guides to entering these settings (they're called APNs - Access Point Names) to help you get set up.

Read our tips to learn more about your phone
So that's your new Microsoft Lumia 650 set up and ready to go. Before you go, we'll leave you with a few tips to help you get the most out of your new phone.
Extend your Battery Life
You may find initially that your Lumia's battery doesn't seem to last too long between charges. Often that is simply due to the newness of the phone - new devices need quite a bit of setting up, downloading apps and getting things laid out "just so". In addition, you want to show your friends what it can do, and these all mean that the screen is on a lot more than in everyday use. While nice and pretty, that big colour screen is a power-hog, so here's a few idea on how to get the most from each charge:
When exiting an app, use the back key to close it completely, as the Windows key will leave it running in the background.
- Shorten the time it takes for the screen to turn off. Tap Settings > Personalisation> Lock screen> Screen times out after and select 30 seconds or less.
- Reduce the screen brightness. Tap Settings> System> Display and use the slider to decrease the brightness level, saving power.
- Turn off Bluetooth. Using this only when necessary will save power. Tap Settings> Devices> Bluetooth and flip the switch.
- Enable Battery saver mode. This will limit background app updates and push notifications, making more power reserve available for core functions. Tap Settings> System> Battery saver and flip the switch to turn it on.
Bring some colour to your life (and your Lumia!)
The Stock colour scheme of the Lumia 650 won't be to everyone's tastes. Many people prefer a lighter interface, and the Lumia will allow you to customise most aspects of this. To get started, head to Settings> Personalisation> Colours.
You can switch from Dark to light mode, which eill give your screen a white background rather than the standard black interface. You can choose any of 49 accent colours which show on the tiles on the front screen, as well as on settings icons and things like switches and buttons within the settings menus. You can also choose to turn the navigation bar (the bar at the bottom of the phone with the Back, Home and Search icons on it) the same colour as your highlight by selecting that switch.
You won't have to leave the settings to see what it will look like though, as there is a preview window at the top to show you exactly what your changes will look like.
What are you waiting for?
Using your Notification Bar
The notification bar sits at the top of your phone screen and shows you when new voicemails, emails and other messages arrive on your handset.
To view or respond to a notification, touch your finger to the top of the phone screen and drag it downwards. The notification bar will drag down with your finger, showing you more detailed information about each symbol in your notification bar.
Touch one of your notifications to be taken to the related app - tapping a text message will take you to your messages, tapping a missed call will take you to your call history, and so on.
There are also buttons to quickly enable and disable some of the more commonly accessed settings, making your phone easier to control and master!
