Unboxing and assembling your HTC Desire 530
Firstly, let's make sure your phone came with all the necessary cables and accessories. Inside the box* you should find:
- 1 x HTC Desire 530
- 1 x USB mains adaptor
- 1 x USB cable
- 1 x Wired headphones (with spare earbuds)
- 1 x Information pack (with SIM tool)
*some box contents may vary
You will need a nano-SIM card, either removed from your old mobile phone or a new one given to you when you got your phone, and if you want to add a microSD (memory) card you will need that to hand as well.
Assembly
The HTC Desire 530 is a unibody handset, and as such does not have a removable back. This means that the SIM and memory cards are installed in trays which slide into slots in the edges of the phone.
Place the phone screen side up on a flat surface. There are two trays in the left hand edge of the handset, the nano-SIM card goes into the one nearest from the top edge of the phone. You should be able to see the outline of the tray with a small notch at the top. lift this tray cover with your fingernail to uncover the SIM and SD tray, then remove it from the phone by pulling it out with your fingernail. Place the nano-SIM into the tray correctly orientated so that the contacts are facing up, and the cut-off corner goes into the slot first. Gently slide the tray back into the body of the phone until it stops.
If you want to install an SD card (memory card) this goes into the lower tray. The microSD card should be placed into the tray correctly oriented with the gold-coloured contacts facing up, and so that the narrow end is inserted back into the handset first. Carefully slide the tray back into the phone, and press home so the tray is flush with the handset.
Charge the battery
The next step is to make sure the battery is charged. Connect the supplied mains adaptor to the micro-USB cable, and then connect the other, smaller end of the cable to the port in the bottom edge of the 530. If the battery is fully charged, a solid green LED will appear above the screen on the front of the phone. If the LED flashes orange instead, it simply means your phone isn't fully charged, but you can still work through these chapters while your 530 is charging.
Now the SIM is inserted and the battery should be fully charged, we can move on to the next stage - turning the phone on and running through the first time setup wizard!

Set up your phone for the first time
If this is the first time you've turned on your new HTC Desire 530, it's time to complete the setup wizard! This is a fairly straightforward process which we've documented below to help make things easier to follow.
Questions?
If you have a question about your phone and can't find the answer here, why not post a comment at the bottom of the page and share it with us!
After making sure the phone is charged and the SIM is inserted as explained in the first chapter of this guide, turn on your HTC Desire A9 by pressing the power button which is half way up the right-hand edge of the phone. Follow the steps below to complete the set up wizard.
- On the welcome screen, you can change the language of the phone by tapping on English (United Kingdom) and then tapping on your chosen one to select it. Tap Start to continue.
- In order to use the 530 you will have to agree to the inevitable Terms of use. Inspect the privacy policy of you wish by tapping the link and then tap the down arrow.
- Tap any of the other links to see the documents, and when you're happy to proceed (and agree) then tap Next.
- If your SIM card is already provisioned (switched on and has service) by your mobile network, you may be asked to select your network name from a list. This is to configure mobile internet settings, so look for your network name in the list, paying close attention to the difference between Pay Monthly (contract) and Pay As You Go options if shown. Tap on your network name to select it then tap Next. Not every SIM card will show these options, so if you don't see this screen, don't worry too much about it.
- You should now see a list of nearby wireless networks. Locate the name of your Wi-Fi network in the list shown, and tap on it.
- Enter your Wi-Fi password when requested, ensuring that you replicate any capital letters in the password. This password is often shown on a sticker on your router, and may also be referred to as a WEP or WPA key, Wireless key, or Wireless passphrase. When you have entered the password, tap Connect.
- When you see the word Connected underneath your network name and the Wi-Fi symbol on the top line of the display, that's your Wi-Fi connection configured. Tap Next to continue.
- If the Mobile network box is ticked (the default), you will be asked about turning on mobile data. Mobile data is the internet connection through your SIM card, for when you are not connected to Wi-Fi. Most contracts include some mobile data now, but if you are unsure you should check with your mobile network. Tap OK to accept this, otherwise tap Cancel and untick the box before tapping Next.
- You will now be invited to add your Google account (which is an email address ending with @gmail.com or @googlemail.com). All Android handsets need to be linked to a Google account to be able to sync contacts and calendars, and download apps, but if you don't want to do this then you could Skip past this section. If you don't yet have a Google account you can tap Create a new account to set one up for free by completing the onscreen form.
- If you have a Google account already, enter your Gmail address into the space provided and tap Next.
- Enter your password then tap Next.
- To continue, you must agree to the Terms of Service (tap any link to inspect the details) and when you're ready to continue, tap Accept.
- Your Google account can power background services to back up your handset, files and app data, and track your location to make searches relevant to where you are, in addition to powering mapping apps etc. It will also feed back information about problems you have with your Android device to improve the software for everyone.
- Scroll through these services options using the down arrow at the bottom of the screen, unticking any of the boxes to opt out of that particular service.
- When you're happy with your chosen options, tap Next.
- You will then be asked about setting up payment info for your Play Store account, which can be linking a payment card, redeeming a voucher, or having items billed through your mobile network, if they allow this. It isn't necessary to do this right now, but does make it easier for you to purchase apps and media through the Play Store. Choose your payment method, or select Remind me later, then tap Next.
- If you have used an Android device in the past, the Google account may be offering you the chance to restore data from a backup of your old phone. Tap the backup shown to see all available backups to restore data from. Select the backup you'd like to restore the data from, and tap Done. You can, of course, tap to Set up as new device to allow you to start afresh with your A9.
- If your handset can't detect the time zone automatically, the 530 will ask you to check and amend the time and date settings. Tap any line that needs amending, saving the changes as you go, and when you're ready to proceed tap Next.
- The 530 will then ask you about setting up a Screen Lock, which is used to protect your data if someone picks up your smartphone. Tap Set up screen lock, or choose Skip for now to set up a screen lock later (we've got a chapter dedicated to it later on in this guide).
- Personalise your new HTC phone with a name, and tick the boxes on the screen to share your location for better suggestions when browsing the internet. Tap Finish to complete the setup and go to your Home screen.
That's the setup wizard completed. Read on through the other chapters of our Quick Start Guide to find out more information on configuring your phone, including setting up email accounts and downloading apps through the Play Store.

Connecting to Wi-Fi and mobile networks
Questions?
If you have a question about your phone and can't find the answer here, why not post a comment at the bottom of the page and share it with us!
Connect to a Wi-Fi network
You may well have connected to your Wi-Fi router during the initial set up of your phone, but if you didn't, or wish to connect to a new network, then follow these simple steps to get connected.
From the home screen:
- Start by tapping the Apps icon on your home screen (its a grid of squares, in the middle at the bottom) and then tapping the Settings icon to access the system settings.
- In the Wireless & networks section, ensure that Wi-Fi is turned on, tapping the switch to do this if necessary. When it is on, tap the Wi-Fi line to enter the settings.
- You will see a list of networks that your phone can detect. Locate your network name in the list and tap on it.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password for your network in the box provided, ensuring you replicate any capital letters correctly, then tap Connect. The password can often be found on a sticker on your router, and may also be called a wireless passphrase, WEP key or WPA key.
If the password was accepted, you should now be connected to your wireless network and the Wi-Fi symbol will appear on the top line of the display, next to the signal bars.
Connect to Mobile Internet
Mobile internet access is usually disabled when your handset is connected to a Wi-Fi network, so you will need to turn Wi-Fi off to set up or troubleshoot mobile data connections. We'll help you do this, but don't forget to turn it back on again afterwards!
When your mobile internet settings are correct, your phone will show a letter (G, E, 3G, H, H+ or 4G) and a pair of arrows just beside the signal bars on the top line of the display, so keep an eye out for this data indicator appearing!
- Starting from the home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- In the Apps tray, locate and tap on Settings.
- Turn Wi-Fi off by tapping the switch (if it is currently on) then check for the data indicator.
- If you're still not connected, tap Mobile data to see the mobile network settings.
- Tap Access point names to see which settings are currently in use by the phone to connect to the internet.
- You may need to choose your network name from a list of settings available on the SIM card. Tap the correct line to select it.
- All installed settings will be shown on the APNs screen, and if the blue indicator is set against the wrong network, or not showing at all, tap on the circle at the end of the correct line to activate the correct network setting. Check for a data indicator.
- If that doesn't connect you, or you can't see the correct network setting, we can pull mobile internet settings from the SIM card. Tap the Menu icon (three dots in the top-right corner) and then tap Reset to default.
- A warning will show telling you that all APNs are about to be deleted. Tap OK to proceed.
- A list of available network settings available on your SIM card will appear. If one of these corresponds to your network, tap the name to select it, and tap the circle to activate that setting, then check for the data indicator.
If you're still not connected, you may need to enter the settings manually. To do so, go back into Access point names. Tap the menu icon again, then tap New APN which will open a form for you to complete. We have created the Geek Squad Guide to APN Settingsto help you find and enter settings for most UK mobile networks. Enter the details for your network, then tap the menu button and tap Save to set. Check the data indicator again.
If you are still not connected after this step, or your mobile network is not listed in our guide, then we would recommend contacting your mobile network to ask them to send the settings through to your handset.

Find out how to add your email accounts
Like most modern mobile phones, the HTC Desire 530 supports multiple POP3, IMAP and Exchange accounts so if you have one email address for work and a separate one for home, receiving all those emails is easier than you think. Follow the guide below to set up your preferred email accounts.
Questions?
If you have a question about your phone and can't find the answer here, why not post a comment at the bottom of the page and share it with us!
Adding a Google account
We covered setting up a Google account in the initial setup, but if you didn't complete it then you can add one now. A Google account is probably the most important account you can add to your A9, as without one you won't be able to download apps, or back your handset up.
- From the home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- In the Apps tray, tap on Settings.
- When the main Settings screen opens, scroll down to the Personal section and tap on Accounts & sync.
- Any accounts on your Desire 530 will show in the list. To add a new account, tap the + on the title bar.
- In the list of account types, choose Google to start adding your Gmail account to the phone.
- To sign in with your existing @gmail.com or @googlemail.com address, enter it in the space provided then tap Next. To sign up for a free Google account, tap the down arrow underneath the keyboard to move it, then tap Create a new account.
- If signing in, enter your Gmail password then tap Next. If you're creating a new account, complete all sections of the form.
- Agree to the Terms of Service (which you can inspect by tapping any of the links) by tapping Accept to complete signing in to your Google account.
- You will be asked about backing up your Desire 530 to the Google account. This will allow you to recover data if your phone is reset, or replaced. If you don't want to do this, untick the box. Tap More, then tap Next to proceed.
Your account is now added, and you will see a Google line in the accounts list. Email for this account will be delivered into the Gmail app on your Desire A9.
Email Setup
Adding a non-Google email address is a very similar process to adding a Gmail address, but you may need additional information if your account is a non-standard one.
- To get started, tap on Apps, then Settings, and finally tap Accounts & sync.
- Any existing accounts will be listed on screen. To add an account, tap the + at the top of the screen.
- If you have an Exchange email account (commonly used for company email accounts or by education providers), choose Exchange. If your account is the more usual POP3 or IMAP account, tap Mail to set up your account to use the Mail app, or one of the Personal options to have your mail delivered into the Gmail app.
- Our example is using a Personal setup, but the Mail setup works in a very similar way. Enter your email address in the field provided, then tap Next to continue.
- Enter your password when prompted, then tap Sign in (or Next).
- You may have to agree to allow your handset access to your mail, and to sync it to the device.
- If everything was successful you may be shown additional settings to choose how often to check for mail, and whether to download attachments. Edit these to suit your preferences, then tap Next.
- Your account should now show on the Accounts screen.
If your account did not configure automatically, you will need to supply some more settings and enter them manually to be able to receive email. Tap Manual setup to start entering these settings. You will need to know your account type (POP, IMAP or Exchange), email username, password, and incoming & outgoing mail server information. Check out Geek Squad's guide to email server settingsto assist you with inputting this information, but if your provider is not listed you may need to contact them directly for more specific information

How to make phone calls on your HTC
The first step to making a phone call is to open the Phone icon from the home screen by tapping on it. With the phone app open, you will see several headings to show your call history, the people in your phone book, the phone dialler keypad and more. Tap a heading or swipe across to access these in turn.
- To dial a number directly, open the phone dialler and enter the number, then tap Call to start the call.
- The People list shows you all the contacts in your 530. Scroll through the list and tap a contact to open it, then tap the correct number to call them.
- You can also use the keypad to spell out their name. There are letters beside each number; tap the numbers to spell the name (in our example we're spelling out "Adam" by tapping "2326") and the 530 will find them in your contact list! If you know more than one person with the name you're searching, you'll need to tap the correct contact from the suggestions.
- If you prefer, you can search your contacts directly by tapping People then the magnifying glass at the top.
- The menu button (3 dots) allows you access to the settings menu where you can manage blocked numbers, change the size of the dialler keypad and set up speed dials for your most frequently contacted numbers.

- Now you're looking at a blank text message. Pick the recipient by tapping in the To box at the top of the screen.
- Typing a name will bring up any matching contacts on your phone. You can also switch to the numerical keypad and type a number in directly.
- Tapp into the Add text box to type your message. To send the message, tap the speech bubble icon to the right of the text box.
- If you want to add an attachment, such as a picture, video or sound recording, tap the paper clip.

Sending emails and attachments on your HTC
To send an email, you must have already set up an email account on your HTC Desire. If you haven't added your account yet, please check our chapter on adding an email account for more information.
- Find and open the email app that your account is set up in. This may be either the Mail or Gmail app, depending on how you added your account.
- When you can see your email inbox, tap the compose button. This is a red circle with a pen on it, and is found in the bottom-right corner of the email inbox screen.
- New emails will always send from your default email account (which is usually the first one you've added). If you have more than one account on your A9 and wish to send it from a different account, tap the down arrow at the right of the From line and change the email address you're sending from.
- Tap into the To line to select the intended recipient. Start to type their name using the keyboard, and any matching contacts will appear. Tap on the correct contact to add them to the recipient list. You can add further recipients, or tap the down arrow to show CC and BCC lines to send copies of the mail to other people.
- Enter a Subject for your email by tapping into that field and entering the information.
- Once you've entered all the information in the header, scroll down if necessary and tap Compose email.
- Using the keyboard, type your message. If you just want to send a text email, then you can send it once you've finished typing by tapping the right-facing arrow on the title bar.
- To add an attachment, tap the paper clip on the title bar. When the menu opens, you can choose from where to attach the item.
- Attach file allows you to send a file that is already on your A9. This may be a sound recording, a photo or video you've taken, or a file you've downloaded. Insert from Drive lets you attach an item you have stored online in your Google Drive, as long as you've added your Google account to your handset. Navigate through the on screen menu to find the item you want, and tap it to add it to your email.
- Add further attachments if you wish, and compose your message. To send, tap the right-facing arrow.
