Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 setup guide

So you’ve just purchased your brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and opened up the box, but where do you go from here? We’re here to help guide you through setting up and personalising your tablet. You will require a wireless internet connection for this setup, so please ensure you are near a wireless router!

  1. Set up your Galaxy Tab 2 for the first time

Set up your Galaxy tab 2 for the first  time

To get your fancy new Android tablet up and running, simply follow the steps below to begin!

  1. Hold down the button located in the top right hand corner for three seconds or until you see the Samsung logo pop up, then let go. This button is also used to put your tablet into a locked state.
  2. Select your language of choice from the dropdown box and then touch the Start button to continue. This can always be changed at a later state if you so wish.
  3. Select your wireless network from the list that appears and a new window will pop up. Enter your wireless password into the field shown on screen to connect. This password is usually located on the side of the modem/router provided to you by your ISP . Once connected, touch the Next button to continue.
  4. On the Google account page simply press the Yes key to proceed to the Login screen.
  5. In the fields provided, touch the Email box to enter your Gmail address, then touch Password to type in your password. Press the right-hand arrow to continue.
  6. You will then be asked if you would like to keep your data backed up to the Google account and also if you wish to restore previous data from your existing Google account to this tablet. Tick the boxes which apply to you, then press the right-hand arrow to finish setting up the account.

  7. Your setup is now complete and you are ready to dive into the wonderful world of Android!

Set up email accounts

For a lot of people, emails are a key part of their everyday life and the ability to receive these emails on the go is an incredible feature tablets and smart-phones provide. The Tab 2 supports multiple email accounts which enables you to not only keep your personal life on track using your personal account, but also lets you keep up to date with your work life. Follow the guide below to set up your email accounts.

  1. Touch the Settings button located at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Swipe down the left hand side until you find the Add Account button, touch this to proceed.
  3. Touch the Email option to start the setup wizard.
  4. Most email addresses can be configured extremely quickly, simply type in your email address and password then touch the Next button to continue.
  5. If that was successful you will be taken to the Account Settings page which lets you pick how often you would like the app to check for new emails and whether or not you’d like notifications to pop up. Press Next to complete the setup.

  6. TIP: You can view your emails within any app by simply touching the upward arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen and selecting the email app, this will cause your inbox to pop up over everything else.

Protecting our data and personal lives is something we do on a day to day basis, from locking your front door to closing your windows, and your tablet should be no exception to this. You will be hosting a variety of personal information and photos on your device and it is best kept under lock and key. Follow the steps below to secure your device to ensure all of your data is safe.

  1. As before, touch the Settings button located at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Swipe down the left-hand side until you find the Lock Screen button, touch this.
  3. On the right hand side you will see three options - Screen Lock, Lock Screen Options and Owner Information. Touch Screen Lock to continue.

  4. You will be presented with six options - Swipe, Face Unlock, Pattern, PIN, Password and None; we will be setting up a PIN so touch this to continue.
  5. You will then be taken to a screen and asked to enter a four-digit PIN. After you have entered this, touch Continue, confirm your PIN and touch OK to finish the setup.
  6. More options will now have appeared under the Lock Screen section, allowing you to set a lock time to lock the tablet as soon as you hit the power key and also to include a swipe gesture before entering your PIN. If you wish to, you can also add some owner information; this can be a phone number or contact details in case someone finds your device. To change this simple tap the Owner Information button, enter your details and touch OK to finish.

download apps on your Galaxy tab 2

The Google Play Store is the home of all things Android; this is where you can purchase apps, books, magazines, music, and even rent movies. The majority of premium apps have a free and paid version so if you wish to try out some applications before purchasing, you can! To learn how use the Play Store simply follow these steps.

  1. Load up your App Drawer using the square button in the bottom left of the screen.
  2. Navigate through the pages and touch the Play Store button.
  3. Once the Play Store has loaded you will see a variety of sections, Apps, Games, Movies, Music, Books and Magazines. We will be downloading the Facebook app to get a feel of how everything works, to do this click the search button located in the top right-hand corner of the screen, type in Facebook and touch the Magnifying Glass button on the keyboard.
  4. The Tab will display a variety of apps that contain the word Facebook, tap on the first one and go into the app's summary page.
  5. Once the next page has loaded, you will see information and screenshots about the app. To download Facebook, simply tap the Install button followed by Accept to finish.
  6. After you have downloaded your app it will appear in your app drawer, which is where you can launch it from.

  7. Tip: To add a shortcut to an application from your home screen, press and hold an application in the app drawer and drag it to your desired location on your home screen.
