Project Gutenberg
Focusing heavily on the classics, Project Gutenberg's archive currently hosts over 44,000 free books available to download. This is by far the largest collection of free ebooks we've found, and contains works from popular authors like Kafka, Nietzsche, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens as well as many others too numerous to list!
Manybooks.net
ManyBooks shares a similar archive to Project Gutenberg, albeit a little smaller, with a collection of 29,000+ free digital books available to download. I personally find ManyBooks to be much nicer to navigate as well as hosting a few books which weren't easily found on the Project Gutenberg site, so this is definitely a webpage to add to your bookmarks!

Fans of eldritch horror should be familiar with the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, a turn-of-the-century gothic horror writer famous for his Cthulhu mythos as well as being the inspiration for a number of great films like Re-Animator, From Beyond and maybe even John Carpenter's The Thing.
